I was born in 1963 in Greenbank Hospital in Darlington, in the north east of England, and had a very happy childhood growing up in the small market town of Barnard Castle.

As children, my parents took my brother and I on all sorts of adventurous and active holidays, and my love for climbing, canoeing, caving, skiing and hiking was instilled in my early years.

After school I took a year off, and travelled to Israel to work on a kibbutz, and eventually headed home via Egypt and much of Europe, enjoying the freedom of travel.

I went to college in Liverpool where I did a Bachelor of Education degree, specialising in teaching Outdoor Education.  This led on to working in outdoor centres all over the UK and in Europe.  After working for British Rail for a couple of years as a trainer of their youth trainees, I became a self-employed trainer/facillitator.  To supplement my income I also did a bit of buying and selling of cars and motorbikes.

After a couple of years of varying success I went into partnership with my good friend Bruce, and we set up Scarborough Jet Skiing on the north-east coast at Scarborough.  We ran this business for five summer seasons, and when I look back, I reckon we had a pretty amazing time, filled with lots of hard work, but just as much fun and laughter.

In the winter months we ran all sorts of other businesses.  We published magazines, ran a couple of wedding cars, I worked for British Coal Enterprise as a job placement counsellor, and did a bit of work as a kitchen fitter, among various other things.

It was in the summer of 1993 that Laura walked into the caravan on the slipway at the beach that acted as our office and changing room. At the time I knew that I liked her, but had no idea that I had met the girl who was to become my wife, and that I would emigrate to Australia with.

When we sold the jet ski business I set up a cycle hire business, and the year after that worked as assistant manager at Atlantis, the big outdoor swimming pool in Scarborough.

In 1998 Laura and I took our first trip to Australia. Her mother had been born there, and Laura had family there that she had never met. Our first trip lasted for a couple of months. We flew into Sydney, and bought a cheap car, selling it six weeks later in Cairns. I chose to use my half of the car money on a three-day live-aboard dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef.

Back in England we both worked hard and saved our money, and took a second trip "down under" in December 1999, seeing in the new millenium at Sydney Harbour.

We married in November 2000, and made the decision that we wanted to move to Australia. At the end of 2001, having sold most of what we owned, we set off, and arrived in Perth on 9th January 2002.
